I bought the Canon Rebel (D350) and love it!!!

I've gone around the world with it, and taken over 3,000 pictures. So I can safely say it can take the beating. ;-)

It offers many of the features of the high end, yet has idiot mode for those time you don't trust you self to get it right.

Canon also has a cool little free online course for using it. Great for learning a little bit about of those choices you have.

Then of course, the lens! What you buy for this camera will work on it's big brothers later.

It had been over 20 years since I used a SLR, and had forgotten much. I figured buying the less expensive body to learn/practice on, and putting my real money on the good lens would give me time, then I could buy the high end when if/when I'm ready for it.

So far so good!

The Canon Digital Rebel sells for about $500 used. There are thousands of lenses to choose from.
