It is referred to as the dog going into "heat" which is like, puppy season. Since youve never had a female puppy i would HIGHLY recommend getting her spayed asap, as it will greatly reduce the likelyhood of ovarian cancer and health problems that arise with dogs that haven't been fixed. Also, it cuts back on behavioral issues such as overexcitedness and humping (yes female dogs will do it also.)

Yes. Dogs start having periods, called heat cycles, generally anywhere between six and twenty months of age. These last usually for about three weeks. They will be able to be bred during this time so you will need to keep her in the house. This occurs every six months though a few individuals have them more or less frequently. I really recommend just spaying her around six to eight months old. Spaying her BEFORE she goes into heat drastically reduces her chances of breast cancer and completely take away the chances of uterine and ovarian cancer. Even if you get her spayed after her first heat it will still reduce the chance of reproductive cancers. Heat cycles can cause a condition called pyometra which is a very serious, often life threatening, infection in the uterus. You don't need to take my word for it. Talk to any vet about it and they will let you know.

Yes females do have a sort of period called a "heat". A heat cycle can be anywhere from every 6 months to once a year. Not all females bleed while in heat and you can only breed when the female is in standing heat meaning when the fluid runs clear.

They don't have periods like we do bu they do go 'on heat'. This is the equivalent of a human female ovulating and dogs can wander at this time. It will also attract male dogs around. I think you should have the puppy desexed before she comes into heat, your vet will be able to tell you the appropriate time. This stops them coming into heat and makes female dogs much easier to live with.

Oh yes.. usually twice a year...Female dogs usually have pretty regular intervals between their heat periods until they reach their "senior" years. At this time, the heat periods tend to have longer intervals between them, but not to completely stop. For really big dogs, the senior ages start around six years of age
and for small dogs more like eight or nine years of age.

They come into heat about once every six months. They start anywhere from 6-12 months.
They are in heat for three weeks. They will have to be kept away from other dogs and they bleed and have discharge when in heat.
If you have a femae you can have her spayed and she will not have these heat periods and you will ower her risk of mamary cancer.

If the female dog is not spayed, she will have a period when she goes into heat. Believe it or not, they actually make pads for them! If you don't want to deal with it, get her spayed at 6 months, or when the vet says it's okay to do so.

Bitches go into heat, how often depends on the individual, some as often as every three months, some as infrequently as once a year. You can purchase special pants to put pads in when she is in heat, they have a hole for the tail, or on the cheaper side a pair of boys briefs put on backwards works just as well.

Female unspayed dogs go into heat a few times a year. The heat cycle lasts about 3 weeks. Please do some research before getting a dog, especially since you didn't know that.
