I wear contacts. They aren't the kind you sleep in, but sometimes I do sleep in them. Is that bad for my eyes? I only do every once and a while. All the other times, I take them out at night and put them in in the morning.

Your contacts need to be cleaned constantly to avoid an eye infection. Sleeping in them will cause a build up of bad germs. If you do sleep in them by mistake, make sure you thoroughly wash them in the morning before you wear them again, and also blink your eyes several times (or watch a sad movie) to generate some tears to wash away any germs.

But I would discourage you from sleeping with them. A good way to remind youself would be to paste a reminder message on your ceiling above your bed, telling you to remove your contacts.

Sleeping in contact lenses lowers the amount of oxygen getting through to your eyes, thus putting you at a higher risk for eye infections. The only way to tell if it is an infection or if you simply irritated your eyes is to go to an eye doctor. If it is an infection it is important to have it looked at right away; some types of infections can get very severe and cause scarring and blindness. There are certain brands of contacts that can be safely slept in (made of newer, more breathable materials) but you must talk with your doctor to see if you're a good candidate.

I've always been told by my eye doctor that you should take them out when you sleep. I do wear the kind you can sleep in and he still recommends that I take them out at night just so my eyes can "breathe". It is hard on your eye to wear the contacts for long periods of time because it limits the oxygen to your eye. I know it always feels better to take them out at night and put them in fresh in the morning instead of waking up with my eye so dry and then searching for the rewetting drops.

Contacts limit the amount of oxygen your eye can absorb. You need to take them out at night and give you eyes some time off.
Pepole who sleep in them or wear the extended wear lenses are more prone to infections and other problems.
I have worn them for about 25 years and have never had problems but Itake them out every night.

Never a good idea ! Sleep deprives the contacts of oxygen, which makes the lenses very rigid. When you then attempt to remove them, there is a great potential for harming the eye by scratching .

It is bad for all the reasons stated above and it can damage your cornea. It also doesn't allow your eye to get oxygen. Once in a great while isn't the worst thing in the world, but try not to make a habit of it.

It is not as bad for your eyes as it is for the contacts. The less you wear the contacts the longevity of the contacts is greater.

I guess the overall answer is: From the cost of contacts: Your wallet is in trouble.

Yes, it's very bad for your eyes. I don't even know why people want to sleep in them.
