Are you possibly from a different region than the in-laws? If so, a "typical" or unique food from your area makes a nice gift. If they drink wine, that is always a nice choice. Oh! Do you have a cute picture of your daughter and their son? A small print in a frame (probably no bigger than a 5x7) would be a nice gift with a personal touch.

Wine is only good if they are wine lovers. If you do choose wine, be sure it is a really nice bottle to their taste.
Other than that, something locally crafted by hand, a beautiful potted plant (get advice from your son in law), a "spa basket" (I think someon else mentioned that) or a beautiful book about your area, if they aren't familiar with it.

visit a very, very nice bakery in your city/town and take a nice platter. German bakeries make fabulous butter cookies, Italian bakeries have the rich pastries and French bakeries have the decadent chocolates and minatures. Each of these places has something for everyone. You are their equal, so your gift should be thoughtful, but not pretentious.

A nice bottle of wine if they drink (not eveyone does so check this out before hand)
A nice box of chocolates (Fanny Mae or better)
A last resort would be a nice flower arrangement or plant
Do a little questioning of your daughter about her future in-laws so you can make the best decision.

Usually a gift is sent 'after' the visit...and it's usually flowers with a thank you. However, if you'd like to take something with you, get something you know they will like or use...if you know them well enough. If you don't have a clue, stick with something classy like fragrant hand soaps from Bath & Body or a small basket of foods produced in your area...if you're from another city. Another nice gift is a small basket of assorted coffee's and teas....along with fingertip tea towels.

Ask what the family are fond of,maybe they are not wine drinker, you must have to ask your future son inlaw what delicacy or preparation they preferred for so that they have a warm welcome for you!Better if you will give the cakes and salad as your gift!Or brownies!

sounds good.Try flowers in a nice keepsake vase, or if they drink-take a nice dinner wine with a set of wine glasses; or a cheese platter on a nice keepsake platter. Or if you are a crafter, you could make something special for each of them!

You should take a cake or something like that so that way you all enjoy the gift.

Not a plant that doesn't sprout for six months! m (a la Meet the Parents)
But, a nice, easy-to-care-for house plant in a nice pot would be good. Something to add life and vibrance to their house.
