Due to the lack of any sensible people or suggestions out there, the best I can do is to tell you how we picked our nursery (day care centre) in the UK.
First we narrowed it down to bus routes in case my wife who cannot drive needed to pick up/drop off one day.
We then rang each one and arrange a visit. We crossed off all but 2 from the list due to either broken toys around, uncleanliness, unhealthy diets, or no structured cirriculum. The last 2 we then arranged further visits where they allowed you to talk to staff and exisitng parents. We also checked the Ofsted report, this is a UK government accreditiation where nurseries are assesed for level of achievement and standards. Lastly, once we picked one, they have a phaseing in, where you go for one week with your child, and join in as such.
I know it sounds a bit OTT on paper, but heh, your child is the most precious thing in your life, don;t spoil it's chances right at the beginnning. Good Luck.
