Winston, my 60 pound pittbull is a lover, not a fighter. He gets along great with my mom's foster dogs ( 2 boys and a girl) and they are both older and younger than him, all are larger than him. We are looking to get him a perminent friend for home, a female and we want a dog that is in his groove... loving, intelligent, and playful. We've been looking at Petfinder.com and like american bull dogs, stafforshire terriors, rotts, mastiffs, and other larger breeds... what is your opinion on a good playmate ( new addition to our family)?

I think it is more of the personality of two dogs together also. The breed really doesn't matter.

However, I would suggest another pitbull (female) that has the same temperment and energy level as the dog you have now. You want a dog that can tolerate the rough play. They like to run and romp, and wrestle.

Then, on the other hand, if your dog has alot of energy, if you get another dog that does not has the same energy level, that will calm your dog down some.

I have two pitbulls - female (Alexis) and male (Zacheri) and she plays harder than the Zacheri does. They get along great. When he settles down, she goes somewhere and lays down too.

Go to a shelter and rescue a dog from there, it will be ever so grateful. I agree with others, let Winston do his own picking.

I love pitbulls..........they are the best !!!!!!!!!1

You'll want to choose a dog of about the same size as your dog as not to intimidate your dog or make him feel superior. And make sure that they get along very well. I own a pitbull and when I got him as a youngster he loved other dogs but developed animal agression when he turned 2.5 years old and I can't have him around dogs now. I've had him in professional training with no results. He is show bred too, not even fight bred. He loves and protects people and children but he can't stand other animals. Just remember that animal aggression in pitbulls can show up at any time (and no, with pitbulls this is not "optional" or how you raise them. how you raise them helps decide how they handle the aggression if/when is arrises.) People bred this trait into them and although it doesn't show up in most, it does show up in some no matter what training they have. We have to learn how to deal with it, and so I take my dog to training, I take responsibility for him and get him temp tested every year. No matter what companion you get for your pup, never leave them together unattended at home! Dogs can get into fights over the silliest things and you pitbull will win.

I have a Pitbull, a German Shorthaired Pointer, and a Doberman Pinscher that live inside and they all get along great. It's not the breed, it's how you raise them. Check the local pounds first, look for similar age and weight. You want both of them to have fun but also be able to defend themselves in case they have a fight. We've had a few scraps, usually over treats and toys... but nothing they didn't heal from and forgive the other dog over.

Definitely consider a female for him. Opposite sex is the best companion for pit bulls. Also remember NEVER leave them 2gether unattended--as much as I love pit bulls and my 2 (Mya and Remy) love each other 2 bits they should be kept separate when left alone 2 avoid any issues. Remember when finding another companion u should let ur dog "Winston" pick his new friend---set up play-dates or visit a humane society that has dogs there that u can see if he likes! Good Luck and kiss ur pitty from me♥ I love them!

Definitely a Bull Dog!!!! Not just because they get along with every thing, I love 'em. Can I live vicariously through you? I want one soooo bad. Good luck. I know what ever choice you make Winston will love his new companion.

The breed of the companion doesn't matter. What matters is how well the two dogs get along together. Set up a trial play date for them and see how they get along. You will even be able to tell with a little puppy how it gets along with your current dog.

Let your dog decide! Take him to your local shelter where he can visit with another dog. Most shelters encourage this and when your dog finds his next best friend, you will know. It doesn't matter what the breed is as much as the personality of the dog. Good Luck.

no lie, I have known a few people who actually have Yorkies and they get along great with their Amstaffs and Pittys. I have a Pit and we have a chihuahua with him. He is great, just like your Winston.
Just a side note.
Singlemom1, you did not answer the question, But thanks for jumping on the bash band wagon us Pit owners will jot that comment down to ignorance.
Thanks

Pitt bulls are ferocious animals. They should not be around people.
