Get a 1989-1993 Volvo 244 or 245. These cars are great! They can last forever, up to 500,000 miles. They get great gas mileage. Junkyards are full of cheap parts and they are really easy to work on yourself, but repair shops are cheap on this car too. Really fun car that you can "get in to.'' $4000 should get you a pretty nice one.

You should be able to get a pretty recent model Hyundai Accent for that price. A small but reliable car with good gas mileage.
