There's a name for that disorder, hang on I'll retrieve it...

OK I found it - also note the last paragraph - there is more than one possible disorder.

It sounds like you're describing a condition called trichotillomania. Literally, this term means hair (tricho) pulling (tillo) frenzy (mania). People with this condition repeatedly and incessantly pull out their hair, one strand at a time, from the roots. They most often pull hair from the scalp, eyelashes or eyebrows. Trichotillomania can lead to large areas of baldness (alopecia) and sometimes even complete absence of scalp hair.

Trichotillomania often begins in childhood or in the teen years. It can be a temporary, short-term habit early in childhood. The disorder may also develop later in life. The cause isn't clear. But it can run in families. Stress may also play a role.

Trichotillomania isn't an intentional or voluntary behavior. People who have it are often upset and embarrassed by it. The urge to pull hair usually accompanies a strong feeling of anxiety. The person believes that the only way to relieve this feeling is by pulling his or her hair. But this brings only temporary relief.

Most people who have this disorder go to great lengths to hide the hair pulling as well as the effects of the hair pulling from others, such as by wearing wigs or makeup or avoiding social situations. They often suffer silently and don't realize this behavior may be due to an emotional disorder. Depression is common in people with trichotillomania.

Occasionally, people with this condition may twirl their hair and count the hairs pulled. At times, individuals may swallow the hair they pull. This sometimes results in a serious medical problem called gastric bezoar — more commonly known as a hairball — which may require surgical removal.

Treatment of trichotillomania usually involves a combination of:

Antidepressants
Behavior therapy, using a treatment called habit reversal

Not all hair-pulling behavior is trichotillomania. Hair pulling can be part of other mental disorders or related to stress. The stress-related habit of hair pulling usually isn't as severe as in trichotillomania.

High levels of hormones can cause all sorts of odd behavior depending on which hormones we are talking about. Doesn't sound like some obsessive-complusive thing because in cases like that you'd have to be doing things like washing your hands 50 times in a row, opening and closing the door 10 times to make sure it was really closed, turning the light off and then turning it on and off again a dozen times to make sure it was really off... that sort of thing.

Maybe you have gnats or fleas. Go to the pet store and get a good flea powder and dump it on your head and see what happens. If that doesn't work, maybe get a real short haircut so you can't get enough of a grip to pull the hair out. If you have an urge to do something like line a nest with the hair you are ripping out then maybe you think you are some kind of a bird. Do you feel and urge to perch? When talking do you somtimes emit a high-pitched chirp? Do you sometimes flap your arms like wings for no apparent reason? This might be a clue.

Try the flea powder first and then we'll take it from there.

Not hormones, stress, will cause you to hair pull. Get help from your doctor. You can learn to control this, but there might be some underlying problems that need to be dealt with as well.

Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is a type of psychological condition that involves strong urges to pull hair.

No, I think it's just stress. Maybe a strong need for anger management. (laughs) I noticed the problem is mostly in women. So maybe it is something to do with hormones. Try talking to your doctor though, they say that there is something wrong with these people and there are ways to help. Are you depressed allot?
