When I was in 9th grade, a portion below my chin swelled up, and I had a hard time eating and drinking stuff. It was a small region on the left top portion of my neck, right below the chin. It was just about an inch or so in length and remember it being hard and a bit numb. I remember it hurting only a little bit when I didn't touch it or do anything. But when I started eating it would hurt.

We were at our grandfather's house for the holidays then, and though my mother knew about it, she never did or said anything about it. We stayed at our grandfather's place for about a week and by the time we returned home everything got better.

But I still wonder what that was. Why did I get it?

That was a swollen lymph node. It was a sign that you were sick or fighting off an illness--your immune system was compromised.

I had the same thing, in the sides of my neck. My parents blew it off. It didn't go away until I was an adult and started going to a Chinese doctor.

It could have been mumps and it could have been lymph nodes. So, I would just thank God it is over and hope to never have it again. You are fortunate, you came out of it o.k. Good luck and God Bless. ( also you never know why you get anything)

It could have been a lymph node or a swollen salivary gland. You might have had mumps--were you vaccinated for it?
