In some ways, religion can be beneficial. For example, many raise money for the poor, and underprivileged children.
However, religion has caused some of the worst events in history. It is certainly responsible for quite a few wars by fueling hatred towards anything different (other religions, homosexuals etc.)
And the child sexual abuse scandals within the Catholic Church are definitely crimes, not to mention how they tried to cover them up.
I believe that religion has the potential to be helpful to communities, but often prejudices, hate and greed get in the way and it causes more animosity than benevolence
When too much power (and money) gets into the wrong hands, religion can definitely become a "crime cartel."

Organized religion is the crutch of civilization. It tries to satisfy all the important necessities that civilization does not supply: community, support, security, a place to go when you have nothing. These are things that are needed mainly by the majority of people with little money. No wonder people are willing to give their life savings to it. I'm pretty sure the gods don't need any money. They've done fine without it for billions of years. There are basic needs not being met. People don't want to die alone, feeling worthless. Civilization will not fill these needs. It doesn't have to, it has organized religion. And the religion reaps all the benefits. You can't go two blocks in my town with out seeing a church and they're always getting bigger. So they can get more poor hopeless people in there to give them money. Join a religion that's not organized. You don't need a big expensive church with a fancy organ to find your god.

like the smart guy George Carlin as quickly as suggested, "faith has been the perfect reason of dying because of the fact the 1st gentle of time." now not precisely his quote yet thats what he meant. Holy wars have seen greater effectual bloodshed than different type of conflict. in case you think of conflict is dumb, what's smarter approximately killing over land because of the fact an imaginary guy interior the sky suggested you to do it? faith has led to human beings to do many stupid themes contained in the time of background. The Salem Witch trials? Burning risk unfastened women persons on the stake interior the call of God because of the fact they have been "witches"? The Crusades? useful i think it would desire to help some human beings by ability of ability of complicated circumstances. They make themselves have confidence that somebody (God) is there helping them to make the struggles seem lots much less complicated. yet till ultimately I see info of suggested guy interior the sky then I wont have confidence any of it. i count on technological understand-how because of the fact a minimum of technological understand-how has some info. And if there isnt any info at this 2d, then technological understand-how will bypass better. perchance we are able to by ability of no skill understand yet a minimum of technological understand-how will shop pushing forward to comprehend. while in comparison with in faith the region they already understand how the universe began and thats the in user-friendly words way it began out and thats the in user-friendly words way its ever going to be.

crime cartels?
Only if they institutionally violate laws of the land they are in.
I don't know of any examples of that, but I expect there must have been religions organized specifically to violate law.

enginerd: crime cartels? Only if they institutionally violate laws of the land they are in.
They wouldn't be much of a crime cartel if they didn't break the law, would they? :-)

they are groups trying to understand why we exist. I think that's how religions start. Religions seem better at starting wars if anything.

A cringe-making money machine based on fooling gullible people into parting with their hard-earned cash. As far as I can tell, anyway.
