A friend bought a computer that had AOL already installed and activated (by the retailer) without his knowledge. He has been charged several hundred dollars for a service he has never used (they admit he has never used it) but they won't refund his money! What can he do?

Contact the bank and do a Regulation E claim. That will get the money back into the account.

I had the same problem with AOL. So did others I know.
Once signed on to AOL it's a frustrating time trying to get rid of them.

Call AOL Customer Service and tell them you want them
completely removed from your computer or you will go to small claims court.

They won't give back any money, they will only give
"Credit" for any overcharge. Sue them in "Small Claims
Court.

Of course, get a new ISP first thing.

Firstly, instruct the credit card company / bank to stop payments to AOL. For refund, put the complaint in writing and send to AOl; if no response file a complaint with small claims court.

Nothing, because the agreement he signed when he bought the computer stated that he was ALSO buying service from AOL for a stated period of time. Salespeople usually tell you this when you buy the computer and the plan is usually for 3 years.

Has he asked to speak to a supervisor? Has he gone back to the retailer and spoken with the supervisor there? Usually the proper amount of complaining to the right people can reduce a bill or threaten them with some sort of law suit. Good luck...

Don't pay. And call them and tell them why your not paying. AOL is nasty like that. I've been though it myself. The problem here is that your friend did pay. That's pretty silly. Am I to assume that this person pays bills without knowing what they are first.
