Reincarnation implies the existence of some kind of non-physical component to people - i.e. a 'soul'.

What exactly do you think a soul is? What properties does it have? What part of 'you' resides in the soul?

If it's postulated that consciousness, or awareness, or sense of self resides in the soul, it's difficult to see how this can be reconciled with the complete oblivion which accompanies general anaesthesia. How could a straightforward chemical, injected into the bloodstream, anaesthetise a soul so that it effectively ceases to exist during this time? If consciousness, in the form of a soul, were some kind of supernatural faculty, it would seem implausible that it could be completely disabled by a chemical.

How about some of the other things which we regard as essential parts of what makes a person what they are? How about love, compassion, reason, empathy, memory, conscious thought, character, 'spirituality' and so on? Well, there is really no plausible doubt that all these things are properties of the physical brain. We can alter all of these properties very simply with alcohol or other drugs, and observe how they change in people who have suffered significant brain damage - Previously placid people become uncontrollably violent, intelligent people become imbeciles, and so on. Stimulate the brain artificially, and the subject reports corresponding mental activity, e.g. 'religious experiences'. We can see from brain research that all these things - thought, emotion, sensation, character traits and so on - are correlated with activity in the brain, and some things can be identified with specific areas of the brain.

So, if all these faculties and characteristics of what we regard as the 'person' reside in the physical brain, as seems to be undeniably the case, and they all cease when the person dies, then what is left to be attributed to a 'soul'? As far as I can ascertain: Nothing. If there is no part of us that can continue after death, then there is no 'afterlife'... and if there is no afterlife, then most of religion is null and void, including reincarnation.

That is strictly a matter of personal opinion. There is some anecdotal evidence to support the idea, but it is not particularly credible to fully support the idea.

The body decays after the brain stops functioning, so it is quite likely the cells will evolve into other life forms. And, ultimately, into human life forms. Perhaps that is where "past life memories" originate.

i think so, i think humans and animals come back in all sorts of things, such as other humans and animals. i have always felt someone or something has been reincarnated by the look in their eyes. so deep, and different.

im a materialist and i believe in eternaty of atoms etc. what does atom mean?.. of course the main parts of our structure our existance etc. we are the combination of uncountable amounts of atoms. so when we die all those atoms seperate/decompose 1by1.. just like the beginning.. so after unknown time(im sure after too long time) if same atoms at the matching/suitable conditon comes together... it means you reborn.. so it's possible but as u know.. very very small amount of chance.. because when u die some parts of u become flowers, some parts of u become a part of soil and some can be portable by wind or other effects etc etc. its hard to explain but.... eyh.. i will go crazy about that topic:D but.. if there is reincarnation it means that there is death and soul.. so there is no death because life goes on and things are always changing shape.. they are not dying just losing ability of moving, losing ability of using its own skills etc. because changing shape.. when we die we become sand. and our childs are come from our foods etc. we change them in our body in suitable conditions etc. if there is sth such death then why electrons on atoms doesnt stop moving!! we die but in our cells in our atoms.. electrons always move.. that shows us there is no death so no reincarnation.. just changing shape..

From a basic "physics" point of view, certainly. The energy of your body will diffuse and merge with other energies. From a "religious" point of view a billion Hindus and millions of Buddhists believe so.

Yes. If you are bad in your life you movee down a step to like an animal. If your good you move back up to a human, and if your good enough you may make it to heaven.
