"A watermelon that is ripe will be faded on the top. If the watermelon has stripes, look at the area between the stripes. This area should be a light green."
"Turn the watermelon over and look at the place where the fruit stood on the ground. If the watermelon is ripe, the 'belly spot' will be white or yellow. If you can see the stripes through the belly spot, it may not be ripe."
A smooth rind usually indicates a good fruit. "You might try to avoid melons that are over-lumpy," Egel said. "Sometimes that may mean the rind on the inside is discolored, which is unappealing to some people."
Watermelons at the peak of ripeness are normally filled out and blunt on the ends. Melons with pointy ends may still be maturing and not as delicious.
Consumers who still want to thump the watermelon should listen closely when their finger flicks the fruit. "An unripe watermelon will 'ping' when thumped. An overripe watermelon will 'thud.' The one you want to buy is somewhere in between."

There is no way to tell how sweet it is by looking at it....the sweetness is determined by how much sun the fruit gets as it is growing and allowing it to stay on the vine until it is ripe...a lot of fruit is picked before it is ripe and it ripens during shipment...but this will not sweeten up...some fruits are even sprayed with chemicals to ripen ..but it only ages the colr of the rind not the fruit itself
Thump a watermelon to tell if it is ripe...should have a good hollow thump.

First of all it will have a nice hollow sound when you thump it. Then you will turn it over and look at the underside of it, this is the side that has rested on the ground as it began to grow. It s/b just a little yellowish.......not a lot. When a melon is very yellow on the underside most of the time it is too ripe. You won't always pick a good one, but following the above.....you will most of the time. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, you should ensure there is a yellow spot somewhere on the melon where it was laying on the ground. But, that alone is not an indicator of sweetness. Usually it is hit and miss. My son can pick out a sweet one every time.

Forget thumping. Just look for a nice, yellow belly. That means a ripe melon.
