You should go to a branch of a reputable auction house, like Christy's or Sotheby's. They have offices in major cities in the US. Ask them how they appraise things. They may charge you for their time, unless you want to sell the works.

I would do some research before I showed them to anyone. Search for each author and get an education. Look at pieces of their art of about the same size and subject matter. Check on each piece's last selling price. After you know enough to ask intelligent questions pay for an appraisal. Don't try to get a freebie, and make it plane that you aren't selling but appraising for insurance purposes. By going that route, you may get an honest appraisal. You may not but your odds are better.

You can look at price guides for works of fine art. It may be rather time consuming but certainly cheaper than going to an art appraiser. There is a nice guide at the website below:

try looking each up separately on the net or go to a antique road show . ther might be a art dealer in your area be sure they are good.
