There are several different reasons.
One is out of anger. Also known as engaging mouth before brain.
Culture or lack of same. There are some groups were profanity are daily words. These words aren't considered swearing, but just normal vocabulary.
Some do it, to try to impress others, or try to use it as a power play.
Often done by younger people to try to impress their friends that they can sound mature.
Of course the use of these words, very seldom bring the desired effects.
Food for thought, is it the word it's self or the intention of the word that is offensive?
Darn it or D_m it, both have the same intent.

A better question would be; Why do people view some words as being a "swear" and others not? Words are words. Why do you let some affect you differently than others?

People use profane language as it was taught to them to do so, by being part of a peer group that uses and condones it. It has now become a habit, that will be difficult to break, and its sad, because, the English language has so many words that are more powerful than cursing, and a quiet tone, makes someone listen, much more closely.

I started swearing in order to sound cool and tough. Unfortunately, it has stuck and I've not taken action to stop myself. I do not curse in church, in public, around children, or around family. I find I use swear words now mostly when I lose control and want to intimidate someone.
Must say I'm glad to have read your question, as it brings focus to this bad habit of mine. Thanks for a new personal growth process on which I'm going to be working. Never hurts to grow oneself further.

"Swearing" is useful for release of tension. The stentorious tone of the words used causes a physical release of tension. That's why swear words tend to be short and staccato in nature.

Because it becomes a bad habit that you just can't seem to stop doing and even though you know it's stupid and just perpetuates negative energy you just can't stop doing it...some people drink, some people do drugs, some smoke...I am addicted to swearing.

I think it's habitual. My mom did it all the time as I grew up. Now, I find myself doing it. It really serves no purpose. Recently, I've tried to clean up my language, but if I get really pissed, watch out! It's a hard habit to break but I'm working on it.

have u ever sweared after u've been stubbed in the toe.. it's like that.. it's like a reflex action other than screamin.. i'm sure one can scream a flavour of ice cream rather than abuse but depends on the way one thinks.

To show intensity in what they're saying to you... Or some people just formed a habit of using certain words and don't even realize it....
