I am looking for either a 42" or 50" plasma and see tons of good prices from brands like Vizio and Olevia, but don't want to end up with voided warranty and manufacturer going out of business

These are the most known PDP {glass} module manufacturers:

Matsushita Electric Industrial {Panasonic}
FHP Displays {Former Fujitsu and Hitachi joint Venture}
Pioneer/NEC
LG Electronics
Samsung SDI

All of these PDPs are use in a variety of brands other than their own. For instance, Panasonic Plasma TVs are not as good as their plasma module alone, As fully assembled TVs, they tend to have limited features and a few bugs, but offer supreme picture quality. Brands using Matsushita plasma panel are selected Maxent 42" models, Changhong, Skyworth, Hisense, Bang & Olufsen and Fujitsu 50" sets ONLY.

Hitachi uses only their own panels. Also, By D:sign 42" Japanese model, Philips European and Asian models, Wal-Mart's Viore brand and Fujitsu's 42" and 55" sets all use FHP PDPs.

Vizio 42HDTV and 50HDM sets., Toshiba 42HP66 and 50HP66, HP PL4260N and PL5060N all use LG Electronics PDPs.

LG PDPs are the second best after Matsushita's. Their picture quality is very sharp and clean and the colors are VERY accurate, with deep blacks and minimum bandings known as false contouring.

Pioneer was a manufacturer of their own panels in 43" 1,024 X 768p and 50" with the 1,280 X 768p resolutions {50" only} but they stop early this year. They are now using 42" and 50" panels from NEC and 60" from LG Electronics for their upcoming 70HD series. The 42" entry level sold at Costco a while back use an LG Electronics PDP.

Former Pioneer 43"and 50" PDPs were also use by Runco. NEC use to manufactuer their own PDPs but sold their factory to Pioneer in mid 2004. NEC still offer plasma monitors with NEC PDPs, they now buy them from Pioneer.

Samsung SDI PDPs are use in Dell 42" and 50" models., Philips North American models, Maxent 42" models, Akai, Magnavox, Haier, Sony Commercial Plasmas monitors and many others.

Sony DOES NOT market plasma TVs anymore, only commercial monitors,., they NEVER manufacture thier own PDPs for past models., they use Matsushita's 37" 42" and 50" for their XS955 series., 32" and 42" from Hitachi and 50" and 61" from NEC for their XBR950 Series.

Syntax-Brilliant Olevia only offer LCDs, they get their TFT LCD modules from LG-Philips which is a joint venture by the two companies to manufacture ONLY LCD modules {Panels}.

If you're concerned with the warranty, never, purchase from non-authorized dealers. This mean NEVER EVER get involve with ANY dealer from Brooklyn. None of them are authorized resellers for the brands they offer. buying from them, or any other unathorized dealer, will void the warranty.

So where can one buy a Sony plasma. Oh, that's right THEY DON'T MAKE ONE!

Once again, to the momos that said Sony, THEY DON'T MAKE PLASMA's anymore. If you don't know what you are talking about, then don't bother answering.

Now to answer the question, I would say Samsung, Hitatchi, LG, and Panasonic in that order. The top three have processors that will improve your picture quality while the Panasonic does not.

Panasonic is the best at 42 inches. But, the VIZIO is a better buy and the picture is not bad either. I have a Panasonic and I love it, but my next choice was a VIZIO. There is not much difference in picture quality.

i'm no longer likely to aim and sound like a jerk here, yet he's 4. I dont have any infants, yet have some acquaintances that deliver their young ones over our domicile all of the time. I easily have a seperate television they play Wii on. I easily have a fifty 5" Plasma too...on no account in a million years might I permit a small baby, hardheaded or no longer, play on it. I purely grew to become 30 and the wristband has come off my wrist. returned, to no longer be a jerk...yet it is somewhat your fault.

If your not worried about price get a pioneer elite. For a 42" it will probably be about $4,000 or more.
