Why is it that if you don't believe in God, you say His name whenever you are upset (G*d!!!) or shocked (Oh my G*d!!) or whatever. If you don't believe, why do say his name? If "God's not real", why don't you scream "Easter Bunny!" or "Santa!"? Just a question.

Remember...this is just a question! I've been wondering this for a while and I was just wondering. And no, I don't use these words, I was just wondering why people do.

That is a really interesting question! Quite honestly I have never thought about the reason behind sayin Oh God!! I do it just because it's what I always heard my parents say.
I do believe in God, I don't have enough faith not to believe in God. Frankly I don't see any other way that all these pieces fit together. This world and everyone in it is too beautiful and complex to have just happened.
Yes sometimes I struggle with my faith, I don't understand why bad things happen, but I do believe that it all comes together
Take Hurricane Katrina, it was terrible, and awful, and horrible, but look at the response!! How many people gave time and money, and prayers. That to me means something.

Why do you believe in god???

Stop being so close minded. Not everyone has the same beliefs, why is it so hard for you to understand that???
Each and every person have a unique personalitiy, and different opinions, therefore, not everyone believes in a God. Some of us even believe in a Goddess too!!! Or maybe just a Goddess and not a God.

People say "Oh my God" because its commonly said. You hear it in movies, tv, in the home, outside hte home.

Please have an open mind, and a little more common sense.

Blessed be,

Mostly because God damn it is a curse phrase that go back centuries and everyone uses it. ANd saying Easter bunny is what a wimp would say. What have you got against people who don't happen to believe what you do? Live and let live or shut the hell up.

Are you insinuating that we're lying when we say we don't believe in god, because we curse with the word sometimes? Why would we lie about that? What possible reason could we have for purposely making ourselves unpopular with 85% of the population? Don't be such a nimrod.

The reason we say it is the same reason we say Holy Sh&t or Mother F&cker. It's part of the lexicon.

It is a culturally programmed response to say "god" when under stress.

I have managed to reprogram myself to say 'damn god', if that is any concilation.
I could easily program myself to say something else, but I enjoy the spiciness of this current curse.

I don't believe in god, because there is scant proof of its existence.

Science has shown that many things that were thought to be the actions of god, are in fact controlled by natural cause and effect laws of the universe.

Science being the most reliable source of discovering knowledge/truth yet known to man, empirical evidence shows, is to be expected to continue shedding the light of truth on those realms that were previously thought to be controlled by god.

And, being that science has shown that a god is not necessarily for the universe or life to exist, and being that psychology has shown that morality does not need to come from god or religion, I have no discomfort in continuing to find no use in my life for god.

Science is better at defining truth than god-cults.
And, secular humanism is better at defining morality than are god-cults.

take care.

This is a really silly question.
For the same reason we use words like "What the hell" and "Jeez"!
Doesn't mean we believe in hell or something, just that we grew up around people who use these words everyday, it's hard to think about everything you might spontaneously say!

It's pretty simple. I'm pretty surprised that this one comes up as often as it does.

We learned it from our parents. As easy as that. Sometimes instead of using an expletive or variation of "goddamnit" I'll say "Fanabla." Why? Because my mom says it, and she's not even Italian.

Because they are vernacular expressions that we say out of habit. Plus as atheists, we have the freedom of knowing that blaspheming is impossible.

Its just an habitual expletive and does not reflect ones beliefs.
