Price is only half-way based on actual quality, and the other half is more brand recognition.
Take JL Audio. These are phenomenal subs, and they are "expensive" compared to the base market. They are much lower priced than many others though, and perform far better. JL has always been my first recommendation to people (I used to sell car audio).
Next to that, Eclipse is very good for a reasonable price, though you won't get the thunder that you will get with JL, but the clarity is great. Stay away from "mega brands" like Sony, JBL, Pioneer, etc... these subs are virtually all made by the same manufacturer (Pioneer usually) and will make a lot of noise... literally.
There are a lot of subs out there that are "regional" as well, and many of them are very good. Depending on where you live, you might try looking into some of them at local car audio places. If you want to just order something though, my personal recommendation is JL. A single 10" W7 will blow away loads of multiple-sub setups.

The best buy punch P2's aren't bad and a decent price. I just found a guy at work (older) that tried a nice Rockford 12" and it was too loud so he sold it for $50 with the box (its worth about 300 in a store). Take your time and look for great deals. You could always post a wanted on your local craig's list and see what hits.

look around a lot to choose from it also depends on the space you have for them. Also remember a good quality amp is a must so remember this it also depends on the sound quality the price is usually a good determining factor for the type of rich deep base that you will get remember as well a sub is just for deep tone the main speakers is what you want to spend the money on I hope this helps don't go under 250.00 with enclosure

$350+ If you are buying new, expect to pay no less than that for a good sub. There are tons of decent subs out there for under that price though. Look to JL, Eclipse, RF, Image Dynamics, Adire Audio, or MTX. I am sure I am missing a few, but those will get you started.
