Different kinds of tape include a thin film of an adhesive coating that does not dry (no volitiles). The molecules of the tape are attracted to the atoms (or molecules) of the object being taped. Usually the tape will stick to the non-sticky side of the tape itself so that you can use it in layers. The sticky side will also stick to the sticky side of the tape wherever it touches causing a nasty snarly and often degrading the English language in the process. Not all tapes will stick effectively to all objects (teflon is greasy) and objects must be dry and free of oil so that the adhesive molecules gain close contact with the surface molecules being taped. And we haven't even mentioned how sticky "red tape" can be!

Depends on where your tape comes from.

Answer number one:
Because in this great country everyone who is pleasant and helps with the needs of others gets a better chance of earning MONEY and therefore develops for you great STICKY TAPE.

Or, answer number two, people in other countries do anything at all to stay alive, including working in sticky-tape factories.

And, by the way, "Brian" also has a great answer.

And this is an Engineering question. THAT is priceless !!

Tape is sticky because it has a adhesive chemical compund which therein make it sticky. Trust me I know i've been through it way too many times.

Because if it wasn't sticky, it wouldn't be called tape.

Its an adhesive (just like glue) attached to a plastic strip that is designed to have a high adhesion (stickiness to other particles) and cohesion (stickiness to itself) value.
