I think it would be the same for any civilian. Only in self defense and if there is absolutely no way you deliberately provoked the civilian officer.

An open question. Details? Who hit who first? What were you doing when the incident took place. Do you have witnesses? Hard to say what the penalty would be. But you have to clarify the question before anyone can help you at all.
