He is a well behaved dog but a little shy. I have another dog who is not as scared. The problem has gotten so bad that Bob gets stressed out as it gets dark because he expects the noise to start. I have turned on the radio, fans etc. but he feels the vibrations. This is the second year for Bob and we can not move from the area. I will be dogsitting a family member's dog next week and I have been getting no sleep at night.

Ask your Vet about Xanax. This drug has worked wonders for my dogs, and they don't needs meds anymore for fireworks. It helps take the edge off, without knocking them out. It also makes them go thru the whole firework experience in a positive way, they remember it and in some cases, help get them over the fear of the noise.

According to the Utah Humane Society people, you should keep all animals, especially dogs indoors if fireworks are going off. Also, war movies are supposed to be good because they can't tell the difference between the tv noise and the outside noise. I'm not so sure I'm convinced about that, but hey...worth a shot. Have someone with your dog petting and reassuring him and leave a light on and something you've worn recently nearby. Also try to play with him and get his mind off of what's going on.

Have you tried giving him a place to hide? My friend's dog freaks out every time there are fireworks so she cleared a little space behind the sofa with his favorite blanket and she makes it all dark for him back there. It really seems to help that he is able to burrow under the blanket and hide for a little while. Hope that helps!

Place the dog in an inner part of the house away from windows, and let it hide from the noise. Just bear with it. They will either get used to it or not. No big deal. If you aren't getting sleep, then you worry too damn much.

First act like a storm is fun thing. don't hold or pet your dog...that's rewarding him for silly behavior. Try playing his favorite games. Or give REALLY good treats. Also you can record a storm and play it all day long on low. Do that the first week. Then turn it up for the next week. And up again for the third week. As long as it takes. Good luck

I'm sorry I have no answer. I can sympathise. My dog is scared of fireworks thunder and drums. It is now "the marching season "where I live. (Northern Ireland) This involves lots of mindless marching about to loud drum and flute bands. My dog goes daft with fear. All I can do is comfort him with stroking and verbal reassurance. If you get any help I would love to learn how to conquer it too.

I searched the Internet for ear-plugs for your dog. I was unable to find any with a brief search, but found a product which is supposed to make your doggie blissful even when during stressful situations.

Here is the URL:

My dog has been doing the same thing, she hides in my closet. It takes alot of convincing to calm her down, but she still always does it, she never got used to it.
