I joined the US Army when I was 19. One thing I regret was believing my recruiter. Yes , recruiters lie to you to try and get their quota filled. They put pressure on you and make your job sound fantastic until you actually get there. I became an army cook because my recruiter said that in my job description "I would be cooking for generals". He failed to mention I would be cooking for at least 1,000 people in the field as well. I expected it to be tough and it was. I don't think I would have joined but I got my GI Bill and my benefits. All I know is that if you wanted to actually make a career out of it, be an officer, not enlisted. To be an E-4 specialist, you have to have college credit hours. Be prepared to meet the a lot of people that will annoy you in the army. You will have to deal with a lot of stupidity and low intelligence levels once you get in the army. I didn't like showering with 30 women in the same place. Be prepared to research the jobs the recruiter describes because remember, they lie.

I didn't have any idea how the recruiter lied about how the Army really was. I thought a GI party was something fun, lol. I enjoyed the experience of traveling and learning wonderful skills working with different folks every 2-3 years.

I was in the Marines. I looked into it extensively and to be honest there weren't any surprises. It was the right decision for me and I'm no worse the wear for it.
