Certainly debate is a good and welcome means of understanding. However, this forum is rife with taunts and attacks on the subject.

Many religions come down to faith. Faith is not usually debatable.
Except in a scholarly like situation, I usually don't "debate" religion. What I will do is a "This is what I believe. This is why I believe it. If you agree/want to, great. If not, what do you believe and why?" type thing. Increase knowledge and understanding without pressuring anyone to change views. Religion is much too personal to truly debate on.

People think, that is part of the problem. We are all different and have different perspectives. Light and knowledge and truth come from one source. God instucts If any of ye lack wisdom let him ask of god who giveth to all men liberally and upbraideth not and it shall be given. It is good to get opinions and seek knowledge from eachother but ultimately we need to ask God what is right in prayer. I think people who don't want to debate religion don't know their stuff, or they really do and don't care to debate. It is a choice, again.

I think that people don't want to debate on religion is because they don't want their own personal beliefs questioned. However, having healthy discussions can be very good.
