Because of free will, God gave man free will. Doesn't always make the right or best decisions.

An interesting observation. I think that God created us for God's amusement, after all we are very funny to watch. If one considers the ramifications of eternity then it stands to reason some form of amusement may hit the spot every four billion years or so. With this in mind I would ask of you to further consider that as we multiply like a rampant tank of sea monkeys our divergences create even more humour, like planet sit com; if you follow. Everyone likes a good story, perhaps this could be the true nature of the One, dreaming a little dream come true; the smallest part of which is me and you. Very interesting question, I would never have given this any thought without it; thank you.

In short because God gave (wo)man freewill. Without freewill we'd be mere puppets that truly could not love God along with creation. But with that said there are many wonderful virtues that (wo)man expresses such as love, kindness, enlightenment, sharing, fellowship, appreciation of beauty, sentient recognition and relationship with his/her creator, and the list goes on and on and on.
Edit: drampor, your comments reminded me of the Hindu concept called Lila which is more or less God's Divine Play. This Play has be both theatrical and fun connotations. With that said I highly doubt God takes joy in our suffering. Maybe a comical bump on the head but nothing too rank I suspect.

I don't think humans are screwed up, I think they are just lost and without God. Once someone truly finds God, he's different he becomes a new creation and in God's eyes, this person is wonderful.

Due to the Fall man became carnal and sensual and began to have desires that were not of God. This is why we need God to make us whole again. We are so screwed up from consequence of sin. It can be overcome. God sees our potential, He knows who we truly are so he thinks we are wonderful when we are righteous and repentant. He loves us when we are not, but no unclean thing can dwell with God.

God allows man to make His/her own choices between good and evil. Even the angels can not do that now.
Man is so screwed up because he chooses to be.

Man was created in God's image. Therefore, he was perfect. He is the only earthly creature that could think and reason for himself. He had free will. Man screwed himself up when he abused his free will.
