It depends on the situation. If a child took candy out of the jar without your permission, there is no need to hit them to let them know that it is something they should not do. Sit down and talk to them may take a longer time but it would yield better result. As parents, people want to see their children obey but obeying in tears or bruises is not a pretty sight to see. Then there will be need for apology from both sides when you can understand each other from the start just by talking to each other. Which options would you prefer?
But if the child just climbed out of a balcony, hanging for dear life because he/she wants to be spider-man or super woman, even though you have warned him/her against it. Are you going to hug them and tell them you love them to death or are you going to put your foot down.
It depends on the parents and how they pick their battles. But then, we should all keep in mind, these are children we are discussing about.

Yes, yes, yes! Never ever hit your child! If you love them you will not do that! You will not beat them!!! I just can't understand that someone can beat the children he love. A single smack is wrong in my eyes. But really beating them on the bottom is abuse and totally wrong. Hello? Hitting a child with a belt?? Do you get a spanking when you're doing something wrong? It should be banned at once. I love the U.S.A but it's embarrassing that so many parents still believe that this is right. It is not! And when it's a hurtful spanking it IS abuse. And the child has no defense at all. You're much bigger and stronger. There are other ways. Everybody who hurts such a sweet little human being (even if every child can be some kind of a devil sometimes ;-) )
should be embarrassed. Spanking is the wrong way!
Best wishes

Edit:
Hurting your child is a reason for goin to jail in my eyes...And spanking parents are BAD parents, really bad parents, and I don't give a **** if anybody has a ****** problem with that.

Yes. Spanking children teaches them that hitting is okay. You may find them hitting other kids, and even adults at the playground, at school, etc... Even if kids run in the street or hide on their parents, they don't deserve spankings even though the situations they put themselves in were dangerous. Plus, spanking is not discipline. It's punishment. I don't feel it teaches them what you want them to learn. Discipline is supposed to be used as a guide to monitor behavior.

Well, some people say yes or no. What do you think? Do you think it’s right or wrong? I believe some ways. Some people use their hand or a leather belt to smack a child’s butt so hard is not necessary. Smack a child’s back hand or on child’s butt should be taken easy or enough a child to obey mother or father. That might discipline them enough.

DEFIENTALLY Direct directions using a few words as possible(one word or so per year of age), this helps them understand your wishes. EX: instead of saying, " Get the ****** out of the damb cabinets how many times do i have to *****ing tell you the same ****. Just simply walk over to the child, close the cabinet say, "No in" or "Out", and redirect their attention toward something you would allow them to do . Redirection and distraction are you best bets with a younger child whereas disscussion and compromise work well for older children.

Its all in the way that you think your child needs to be disciplined, and what the situation is. I would not ask any one how to raise my children because what works for them may not work for you.

Well, if your wife/husband behaves out of line do you hit them? Spanking leads to abuse...Period. Not that every spanker is an abuser but until we outlaw spanking, we'll never end abuse.

Fact: The number one common trait among sexual predators is not a past history of sexual abuse but they were children victims of spaking.

Fact: Children who are spanked are 100% more likely to associate pain with love, primarily during intercourse.

Fact: Research has proven that children who are spanked have lower I.Q.'s then those who aren't.

Need more proof? Don't believe me? I wholly encourage you to do some research. Please....

I, in a way do. Spanking them is a painful way yet effective. It will teach them a to remember what they did wrong and what not to do. But do you really think that is a way to be remembered by a child. I think spanking is not the way to go but, there are children in this world that need it.

i totally agree. i believe that it makes the child more aggressive. i use the time out technique for my three year old and found it to be extremely more effective. i dont believe people should spank if you think about it your teachin them a bad behavior for another. so its not really justifying the situation.
