Although the format names SD and XD sound alot alike, these are different types of memory cards. Each can only be used in cameras (or other devices) that are made to use them.

Check out your camera's requirements before purchasing a memory card.

xd and sd card varies in different ways...

-Card Size:
xd is much smaller compared to sd.. about half the size of an xd card.. however, now, there is such a thing as micro-sd.. so it comparatively does not make much difference...

-Memory Size
The highest memory xd card can hold at the moment is 1gb.. xd card have different versions.. The first one was the standard card followed by type m card and followed by type h card... type h has the fastest writing speed.. however, you need to check first whether your camera supports that type of card.. as for sd, the highest size i can recall is 4gb...

-picture quality
compare the pictures taken with an xd and sd card.. you will notice a difference.. research was done by a student with regards to all types of memory card and he found out that xd has the best quality picture produced..

-price
price is also another factor.. xd is slightly more costly than an sd card..

-supporting cameras
not all cameras support both xd and sd cards.. you have to check with your camera dealer first on the kind of cards the camera is using.. most olympus and fujifilm cameras uses xd card... some kodak cameras also uses xd card.. panasonic and canon makes use of sd card.. sony has proprietorship over its own card.. the memory stick.. specially for its products..

i can only list these.. so i hope my explanation has been of some help to you...

cheers... (",)
