Something encouraging like "Dear, you look great in everything, if you think you're fat, you're not looking closely, you're a beautiful woman."
Haha, that was corny.

Becki's answer, above, is the only potential method of not getting burned.
This is a "set-up" question. If you answer yes, you're calling her fat, which means you don't care about her feelings, you lying male jerk.
If you answer "no", then you are lying because she is really certain that she is fat. You aren't being honest with her, which means you aren't very trustworthy. If you were trustworthy, you would have told her the truth. However, this cliche of saying "no" is expected. So in this case, you aren't in any major trouble... but the lie told here will be considered in the perspective of any future fabrications.
To put it in Yahoo Answers terminology, Everytime SHE asks YOU if she's fat, YOU lose 50 points. Flowers get you points, a movie gets you points, chocolates may or may not get you points, depending on her worries of being fat.
A diamond Ring gets you 50,000 points, and that carries some rather impressive benefits, which I cannot get into here for reasons of public decency.
My wife has given up on asking that question to me... I refuse to answer that she "looks fat", and besides that, I think my wife is a hottie, so there is a lot of honesty in my answer to boot.

I'm a girl , but when my mom asks me, I just say YUP, OF COURSE IT DOES. Because most of the time, if you tell them they look good, whether its the truth or a lie, they won't listen to you. Women don't REALLY want your opinion, we just want you to make us feel better, but even with that, we will still do things OUR WAY. So maybe you should throw them off guard and ask the women, WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO TELL YOU? Either she'll laugh, or maybe she'll just look at you like your crazy and forget about it. OR, you could just get a snickers bar! lol

seriously, the truth would be nice. I don't want someone telling me i look good just to make me feel good...if I ask for an opinion, I want a real answer. I can handle the truth.

Either answer you give will be wrong. Stand there and stare at her dumbfounded and say " What? ". Keep doing this until she gets frustrated and gives up. Trust me. This is the safest way around that question.

All you have to say to her is "Honey, you look beautiful, unless you want me to tell you the truth.

Well, in the right tone of voice. You can say....hmm. that's not as flattering on you as (fill in the blank). It matters too, that its sincere.
