I thought it was something like CooverPeedy? but I can't find it now

Yep, Coober Pedy, they've also made a few movies here because of it's moonlike landscape i.e. Pitch Black and Dark City (with my fave actor Kiefer Sutherland!)

Coober Pedy isn't completely underground, but a fair bit of it is. I stayed a night in an underground dormitory on a trip in 2000. Not a place you'd want to spend much time in!

It's called Coober Pedy, and it's famous for it's opal mining. It's also incredibly hot, which is why much of the town was built underground, and why most Australians don't go there.
There are underground hotels if you want to stay there....it's about 950 km north of Adelaide.
