The main danger from a convertible isn't the debris, etc.; although you are more exposed in an open top car, its aerodynamics are engineered so that typical things of that nature would pass over or around the vehicle, not up and into it.

The main danger of a convertible is the lack of protection in the event of a rollover accident. No roof means nothing to keep you inside the vehicle. Even with seat belts the chances for injury or death are much greater in a convertible, even with the soft top up. The only possible exception to this would be the newer retractable hardtop vehicles. Their protection (with the top up) would be basically the same as a hardtop vehicle.

I like "targa top" vehicles like my Corvette, which has a removable roof panel yet still has a solid roof arch behind the driver and passenger. This would keep the car from landing on its occupants in the event of a rollover.

Hope this info helped somewhat.

I don't know about debris hitting someone in the back seat, but from the crash safety perspective, they are almost 100% deadly. It's just cloth and a dinky metal frame separating you from concrete if that sucker rolls over. Give me a good ol' sedan any day.

No more dangerous than any other car if driven sensibly.I personally have not heard of the scenario you describe in 32 years of driving.A motorcycle is much more dangerous, not to ride but because of the inattention of other drivers.

As far the debris concept goes, they would be as dangerous as a motorcycle I would think.
