The best way to describe it was done in a commercial I saw for Adult ADD - It's like a channel changing in your head, and you can't focus on one thing because it changes before you get a chance.

My 9 year old nephew is ADHD. It was impossible to get him to sit through a half hour tv show, even though he wanted to watch it. He had to constantly be moving, and talking a mile a minute. Topics change, sometimes in the same sentence.

He is on medication now, and is a different kid. He is much happier because he can do his schoolwork (he thought he was "stupid" because he couldn't pay attention in class, and couldn't do things because of it).

Often teachers and people want to say an active kid is "hyperactive" or "ADHD". If there is a doubt, take him to a doctor. They will tell you the truth, and will want to help him with some medication, not sedate him. If your dr isn't comfortable treating or diagnosing, ask for a recommendation and go to them. ADHD children left undiagnosed and helped often end up severely depressed, and "give up" because they feel stupid.

Addition:
I just read brandyacheson's stuff - more than likely, your son was misdiagnosed, or had a mild form of adhd. Children today treated with medication are not "doped up" or made into zombies, as you implied. My nephew is still very active, and he is still "him", he just can concentrate now. And to incinuate that my sister can't handle her son's "extra energy" is downright offensive!

I'm sorry you feel that way, but other children with adhd - if given up on or labled as "hard to handle" or having "extra energy" - end up dropping out of school or worse. I sure hope that everyone doesn't feel the way you do.

Ok well the "crap parenting" thing is a bunch of BS. I have a 7 year old girl with ADHD, she was diagnosted at age 4. It is heriditary and her 3 siblings have it, her father had it, and my brother still has it at age 36. I am a stay at home mom and I have been since she was born. Parenting has nothing to do with weather a child is ADD or ADHD it has to do with the brain and being unbalanced kind of like having a high or low matabalisim it's all related to the brain one way or another. Your child is how old? My daughters doctor did the test, a simple question answer "do this do that" type paper work test, at around age 4 because he refuses to medicate children under 4 for ADD or ADHD. Your childs pediatrician can tell you weather or not he/she is ADD/ADHD all you need to do is mention it the next time you're at their office or call to make an appointment and tell the receptionist you'd like him/her screened for ADD/ADHD or just plain out Hyperactiveness. Please keep in mind this is nothing you did or didn't do that made you child like this and it's not a bad thing when a child has ADD/ADHD and it's not a bad thing to medicate them, the ONLY reason I medicated my daughter and still do to this day and will continue to as long as it is needed is because she couldn't pay attention in school long enough to get her work done. She was always making a disruption and being sent home from Pre-K and I felt she would possibly be held back or failed what have you, when she reached 1st grade on up so I chose to consult her doctor and he made the call. So call the doc and get that kid medicated so he/she can be a happy little camper and not being yelled at or singled out because they want all the attention weather they really do or not :) Good attention is better then bad attention :D I truely hope this helps you. By the way the medication my daughter takes is not a narcotic like the previous poster states. The medications used to help calm the children with ADHD are NOT narcotics they are stimulants. Please look up the medication called Aderall on a search engine. My daughter is not in a "stupidly calm" state she is still very very VERY active, her meds just help her pay attention when needed and let her be extremely hyper and active when appropriete. For instance during school, math reading spelling time she's focused and an angel, during recess she is a wild child! lmao it's like she's not even on medication but right back to that brainy little angel when recess is over. Talk to your childs doctor before listening to anything ANYONE including me, here has to say.

I don't think there is such thing as adhd or hyperactive children! If god gave your child extra energy... then he/she needs a way to channel the extra energy, not dope em up til there stupidly calm! I was told by the so called pro's that my son had adhd and then they wanted to med him. He is 12 now and WITHOUT meds and is doing great, he just plain grew out of it. I think we need to remember that all kids are different and develop differently and it isnt wrong because one is different. My son still learns slower cuz he has a bettr short term memory than a long one, and he talks entirely too much, but that is him and I don't want him drugged to change that, drugs are bad especially the narcotics used to treat adhd. I want him too live a long healthy life and starting damage to his organs with drug use in his childhood would not help that! Parents need a reason that they can't cope with thier high energy and compulsive kid and so they come up with adhd and the parents feel better cuz the kids slow down but it really isnt good for them.
Lots of hobbies and it will be harder but all it boils down too is some kids have more energy and some develop slower in the area of self control and can be more compulsive than others. They know it is wrong but they just cant help themselves... it will take time and practice.

Let's get ready to rumble......

It's not the hyperactive child you should be worried about. It's the people who have to deal with him/her with their narrow views that you have to constantly fight to give the child a fair chance. I have an ADHD 7yr old and he handles it better than most of the adults in his life..... Teachers, community members, even some family members. I knew early on something was different about him. My other two kids had softer cries and calm spirits. He would SCREAM intensly before dropping one tear from the time he was an infant. I never got frustrated with him because I really wanted to be sure it was genuine from within him and not coming from a reaction from my frustration, anxiety. If you're dealing with an infant/toddler just be patient, time will tell, but if the child is preparing for school, it's better to know sooner or later so that you're not pulling your hair out trying to figure out what's going on. Take em to the pediatrician.
