chicken liver in crab traps works well. So does mullet. Check the bait store for the correct crab season and thats when u'll catch the most fat females.

I went Crab Fishing at Moss Landing in California. It is a blast. We used the nets and place raw chicken in the middle and tie it down. Talk about fun. The nest time fo the year depends on which ones you are crabbing for. In Florida you can only crab for stone crab once a year and not for long same thing with Blue crabs.

Two basic forms--

Crab pot fishing-- drop a baited cage trap in the water and wait. Productive but boring.

Line crabbing-- tie chicken necks and backs on string, pull the line up and catch the crabs hanging on the bait by net. Takes practice but fairly fun.

You can do well all summer but the biggest ones show up late-- into the autumn.

Throw back the females-- especially ones with roe.

There's abundant anecdotal evidence that crabs molt in the full moon so it's said that's the time to get soft crabs. http://www.blue-crab.org/fullmoon.htm

Regardless how you catch them-- STEAM them whatever you do with beer and Old Bay. NEVER boil them like those Louisiana heathens!

Use a crab pot and dead fish as bait. Also the light from a full moon does help the first night but after that it doesn't help as much.

being from the gulf coast i've learned a lot from my relitives.
the thing to do is get cotten string and turkey necks. cut up necks in 4'' pieces tye the neck pieces with one end of the string.
keep each string about 6' long. sucure string with stick in bank of which you are fishing. throw tied up turkey neck in the water. wait for bite.get a crabbing net. when you see line tighten up gently pull on string bring in your catch. when you barely see the crab, put net under crab and neck and scoop it up. you have your first one.the best time to catch them is summer, and one week after the full moon. p.s. make sure your catch is not an alligater.

always remember use fresh bait, i emphasis fresh.fish preferred.heres why,its a fasinating fact.people always say use old dead sticky baits for crabbing.not true.crabs to not eat decomposing flesh.they shun it.rotten meat and crabs do not get along .especially if its decomposed.heres what shocked me when i learned the truth,i must warn you the explanation is a little gross.have you ever noticed when they dredge a body from a bay you would figure there would be tons of crabs feeding.what do you see.not one once flesh is decompised they wont eat it.when i learned of this it amazed me but the proof was always on tv news.remember always fresh.it makes a difference

I used to crab when I was little. chicken on a string was good for me. You would have to pull the line up slowly and net them fast this way.
