In Nature, Birds and other crabs.

In Captivity, The men and women who "Harvest" these wonderful creatures form their natural home, forces them into tacky toxically painted shells, dips them into chemicals for "bacteria" and then keeps them in horrible conditions until they are wholesaled out. NEXT..Pet stores and retailers who have no clue on how to take care of them and then are purchased by the next predator, the new owner who unless he or she researched on the web about proper care now knows as little as the pet store retailer and the crab eventually suffocates, dehydrates and dies.

Other than that there are the mold, mildew bacteria and mites of an improperly kept captive hapitat set-up if left unchecked and untreated will kill the crabs.

Lastly, agressive crabs in the captive habitat that kill other crabs prior, during and post molt as well as to steal shells or just to be mean... if left untreated an aggressive crab can kill a whole tank full

Hermit crabs actually have no natural enemies and tend to die of natural causes (dehydration, inadequate supply of shells, poor nutrition). Because they have no enemies, scientists have not spent much time studying the habits of hermit crabs.
