There is no right age, it depends on how you feel about your hair. Maybe modeling messed me up but my son started getting highlights in the second grade. I don't even remember how young I was when my hair was dyed for the first time. I personally see no problem with using hair dye at any age. It's really fun to experiment with color and try new looks even if you don't keep them for long. As for damage, well hair is made up of cells that are already dead so I don't see how that really applies. Everything you do to your hair, including brushing and combing, is damaging to it. Just exposing it to sunlight is damaging, because hair is made of dead cells that cannot regenerate or heal themselves like other cells in your body do. I'd say have fun with it while your young enough to do it without people thinking your nuts.

I think gray hair is pretty when it is all gray. It looks bad when it first starts coming in, especially if it is patchy. I would suggest a temporary hair color close to your natural color. That way it gradually fades instead of leaving you with roots. And when it eventually all turns gray you can stop coloring it and you don't have to worry about the growing out phase.

Dying your hair is really bad for it. I'm not going to dye my hair until it's absolutely necessary (meaning when I'm getting gray hairs). But I wouldn't dye my hair now, I absolutely love my hair color. But if you must....most girls I know started dying it in 8th grade, which means they were around 14 years of age.

I think when you are in high scool and are around the ages of 17 on up you should be able to make a choice o0f the nature as long as it is not a very drastic color.
