I'm in Herndon, Virginia (20170) and really wanted to find a late night or, preferably, 24 hour coffee shop; I'm studying for the bar and keep crazy hours. I just procrastinate too much while I'm at home. Anyone have a suggestion? Willing to drive for, say, 20-25 minutes to get to a decent one.

Amphora is good, and there's also a Silver Diner in Herndon (closer than the Tyson's one). My wife is studying for the bar too, and we've often found ourselves at one of those two places. Failing that, take-out from Taco Bell/Wendy's/McDonald's: bad for the soul and waistline, but does keep you awake. :)

Good luck on the bar! If we see you, we'll wave and smile.

I lived in NoVa from 1960 to 1980, and now from 2005 to 2008. It used to be a very conservative area. The Congressmen from my district (Fairfax Co.) were all conservative Republicans for many years. The conservatism reflected the background of many families living there, as many were associated with the U.S. military (because of the proximity to the Pentagon). Now it's more liberal. It's not Berkeley, but it is more liberal. A much smaller percentage of people work directly for the military. Many more work along the Dulles Airport corridor in high tech industries. That area is now more densely populated and larger than downtown Atlanta. It is likely the influx of young, highly educated people in the software and high-tech industries that has made the area more liberal. It's liberal for the same general reason that Silicon Valley is liberal--same type of people, same industries. The person answering below who asks about the African-American population of D.C. doesn't know the first thing about the area. The District of Columbia itself is primarily African American, but Northern Virginia is very, very white. And as for Gregory's response--Well, it's wrong in two ways. First, as others have noted, Northern Virginia is among the wealthiest regions of the country. Second, West Virginia, one of the poorest, is also among the most conservative. In fact all the polls show West Virginia solidly behind McCain. It's surprising how quickly uninformed people are willing to say whatever it takes to advance personal agendas.
