I find if I have a magazine to read or a book.. or even music that I like to listen to on a cd player or an mp3 player that I don't even pay attention to how long I'm on the treadmill. If you're doing something other than concentrating strictly on the fact you're on a treadmill you're just going to want to get off. Try the reading.. seriously once I started reading this magazine while I was on the treadmill.. I had walked/jogged 3 miles by the time I was done!

Find something that you're interested in, and find a way to combine it with running on a treadmill. I read magazines while on the treadmill, and I don't let myself read them if I'm not on the treadmill, so I end up running because I enjoy reading them. Maybe there's a TV show you can watch while running, a lot of people do that, but don't let yourself watch that show if you're not running. Even if it's not a TV show, get it to be a habit. Do it the same time every day, whatever time works for you.

I agree with the other answerers -- listen to music or watch TV. I'd advise against reading while on the treadmill: it seriously cuts into your ability to have a decent workout. Generally, if you can read while doing the treadmill, you are probably doing a fairly light weight workout.
I'd also urge you to consider running outside. You'll be less likely to be bored and your workout will be more rewarding and intense. I run year round and even in the coldest winter days, I go outside... I maybe use the treadmills about twice a year.
Good luck.

You need to start out power walking for at least a week. Your speed should be around 3.0-3.8. If you can sustain a conversation at those speeds without getting out of breath, increase the speed to 4.0 or wherever you feel comfortable. Don't try to run for long intervals, though. Start at 30 secs, then build up to 1 minute and build from there. Also, keep don't try to do it on an incline. That makes it harder and you will definitely become disenchanted with running. Keep your incline level at 0 (at least until you get more advanced).
It's exciting when you get to where you can run for 3 minutes or more but it takes a little practice. Just remember not to overexert yourself.

I have a TV across the room and watch my sitcom shows when I get home. It helps me NOT to watch the clock and before you know it you've jogged through King of Queens and That 70's Show without stopping. Make sure you start slow. Jog through the commercials at first and work yourself up to a good workout. Good Luck

Mix up your routine. You don't have to be on a tread mill the whole time. Go for a walk, take a hike, play tennis or basketball or soccer, do crunches, lunges, weight training... if you do one thing everyday it'll get boring and it won't be fun - its important to do different things throughout your week so you don't get bored and you don't overwork one section of muscles.

Set a time, mark it on your calendar and keep track of your progress. Listen to up beat energetic music while you run. Start slow and add minutes/speed as you go. :) Good luck! Running is awesome!

I try to do it when one of my favorite shows is on and it seems to pass the time faster.
