Personally, I don't think it's appropriate - that's not it's purpose - it's not jewelry, it's a meditative prayer. I'm a devout Catholic, I don't wear a Rosary around my neck - what you may have seen are what we call Scapulars around the neck. But I don't think wearing around the neck is going to send you to hell or anything like that, so long as it's treated with respect and understanding. I do understand why you'd want to - some are very beautiful.
You need to understand what it is though as well... it's an extremely beautiful meditative prayer that Catholics recite that goes over the life of the Jesus Christ.
If you wear it, you should know what it means and how to use it. I've attached some websites that should give you a good understanding of its history and how to pray with it.
There is a question of respecting other beliefs and religions, if you respected other religions and beliefs, you would probably choose not to use it as jewelry.

Back in the old days 1950's and early 1960's, the nuns told us we should not wear rosaries as necklaces.

I had always heard it was. Now they have necklaces that look like rosaries but are much short that I believe are acceptable to wear.

yes, it's not a necklace, it's a prayer tool.
Would u wear a garden hose around your neck?
or would u wear a cord as a necklace?
no, because their purpose is not for decoration

it may not be wrong in some peoples eyes but it is very disrespectful. not for none catholics , but there are alot of catholics and you never know who your talking to. would you go into the church itself and draw a pentagram on the wall. the same meaning comes across. and just because someone else is doing it still doesn't make it right.

it is wrong if you give to the rosary the character of amulet because you are giving to an object characteristics of divinity. and if that is so that is idolatry
