What role does the military play in society?

Beyond strictly defense and aggression, how does having a military affect the culture, the attitudes and the beliefs of a society? On a societal level, how does the military fit in with the rest of the culture?

How does having a military affect a culture?
The military promotes patriotism and honor towards a country. The military is one of the main reasons why you salute your flag. The military also insures freedom and security.

The military does not effect the rest of culture unless a country is in a state of war. I'm not sure what country you are from, but an example of this would be the U.S. The routine life and society of the American public is not effected unless their is a direct threat against the country. Americans ignore the situation in the middle east, but as soon as something hits close to home such as 9/11 their are mass amounts of patriotism.

For decades the military has been considered to be the most trustworthy aspect of our society.
