If your diet is lacking in protein (generally it isn't if you eat meat) protein shakes are just expensive waste.

You can certainly try the protein shakes, but I've been consuming them for about a year and haven't really seen any 'magical' results.

You should first determine how much protein you do get a day. Use a site such as http://www.fitday.com to calculate your nutritional needs. You'll want to get about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (depending upon how active you are with your weight lifting). For females, it might be a little lower but to add mass / muscle, the definition I've always heard is 1g per pound of bodyweight.

To start seeing your muscles pop, you really need to lose the body fat. Get a measurement at the gym from a trainer or buy one of those scales. Generally, to see your abs / definition, you'll need a body fat level of less than 15% for females, 10% for males. The cover models you see, also do strange things to their bodies to drop the water weight and show their definition.

Keep at it. Even if you don't get cover model muscles, you are doing yourself many favors and keeping yourself in shape by doing what you are doing.

Good luck.
