Yes, they have set up permanent bases and will not be leaving anytime soon. That is how Empire works. Look into the history of the Romans and colonization by the English, French and Americans.

I don't believe this to be the case, as we get the majority of our oil from Central and South America. However, I do believe that this time we have really gotten ourselves into a quagmire that is going to be difficult to extricate ourselves from. If we pull out now the whole region will degenerate into chaos (more?). When I was stationed in the Balkans (thank you Bill) I asked people on both sides what would happen if we were to pull out now. Both responded identically. There would be peace for a time (most said about two weeks), and then the fighting would resume. We're going to be in the middle east for a while.

it gets REALLY hot there and cold...he said the temps get really extreme.

well, i think your thought is founded, yet i hope it doesn't happen.
plus, many of the bases we occupy there are bases the US took over from the Iraqi army. occupying those bases on a f/t permanent basis would be very costly and time consuming.

only time can tell.

No. We made a commitment to establish a democratic government there and to help the Iraqis become self-sufficient in the post-Saddam world. Leaving now would be reckless, for there is still a great deal of turmoil there.

I don't think so. Not that Bush wouldn't love to, but I think it's just b/c when it all collapses in civil war, it will be obvious to even the stupidest neocon that they are dead wrong.
