i think it's best to use litter. i suppose you could use dirt, but why? so your cat and floors can be filthy? or sand...might be too fine and wouldn't clump well. gravel is too big. not newspaper unless it's shredded very well. just spend the money on the store-bought litter. it smells better, with the deodorizers, and probably works better than what you've come up with.

Litter is best, because it controls odor and clumps, and cats like it! NOT GRAVEL, they proably wont use it or newspaper. Dirt will make a mess and sand will stick in their fur. Just use litter it isn't that expensive or hard to take care of!

If you are wanting cheap litter to save money this is the best way to go.

Get the scoopeable FLUSHABLE cat litter. Normally like $7 a 16lb box or about $9 for 30lbs at like Petsmart.

Some freak on this price for litter but you have to remember, its scoopable, it lasts longer.

I have two cats. I dump in 1 30lb box or 2 16lb boxes into a 32 gallon tote container, not litter box. For one this keeps the litter in the pan and not all over plus gives the cats more privacy.

Each morning i scoop the clumbs directly into the toilet and flush, smell, stink, mess GONE!

Now this fresh litter box that I set up will easily last for 30 days as long as I scoop it every day and fluff the litter around some.

If you buy normal cheapo litter, the hard clay stuff and you throw it away every few days to week due to it being full. You figure up the smell and the money you spend compared to my method you will save money my way.

Have had cats my entire life and I have tried EVERY method out there.

The cheapest litter box is still the great out doors.

Yes - You do have to use cat litter in cat litter boxes. The best kind id the scoopable where it just lifts out with a scooper. Be sure and keep the litter at least 4 " deep and when it goes down, refill. Change the entire litter at least once a week.

You can use newspaper but it will smell to high heaven and will be horribly soggy when you change it. Earth will be trailed through the house. The cats may not use gravel, it'd be like using that horrible izal toilet paper. You have to buy litter I'm afraid.

You're going to want to use something, if you don't want use litter, that is going to cover up the odor. Also, cats like to scratch and cover up after they are done. You could try sand, but they could track it all over your house. Your best bet is litter. It's not that expensive and you can buy bulk and just add baking soda to it.

they love sand. Dont use newspaper. They have to have something to scratch in and also to cover their poop. The best thing about litter is the odor control, but if you use sand, you can sprinkle it with baking soda daily.

Hi, as i have 5 cats i always recommemd using cat litter, as cats are really fussy on what they do there business on and like to be clean and hygienic and cover up there mess after they have finished. You might find if you use anything other than cat litter your cat won't go on his/her tray and find somewhere else to go. Plus cat litter absorbs any bad odors.

Yes cat litter is advisable as it has special odour control and is absorbant

Sand might be ok, but I can imagine it getting stuck between the cats paws and then tracked all round the house, and paper would just be rubbish!!

=^..^=
