I peel them, break them into three or four pieces and freeze them in freezer bags. When I want to cool off in the summer, I make a smoothie, and the frozen banana pieces are then ready to throw in the blender with other fruit, ice and yogurt.

If you hang them up they will last longer - most superstores sell banana trees which are like little wooden stands with a hook to hang the bunch off - this allows the gases they emit (which also ripens other fruit) to be dispersed and not hang about rotting everything!

I split a bunch at the grocery store, buying only 3 or 4
instead of 6 or 7.

I heard that if you put them in the refrigerator when they are getting ripe they will stay good longer. The cold makes them turn black but that's OK, they will stay a little longer than usual

If you put them in the fridge, the peel will turn brown & look yucky, but it actually helps keep the fruit fresher a little longer.

unfortunately, this time of year, I buy less and use more quickly. If they turn, freeze them and use in smoothies or save for banana bread.
