My first day I said to myself "What the heck did I get myself into?" Then I said "I've got to find a way to get out of here". Plus I was scared half to death. Those DI's can really scared the pants off you. I wonder if basic training is still tough? Back in 1969 they used to hit us but I believe they no longer do that.

"Ohcrapohcrapohcrapohcrap" pretty well sums it up. By the end of the first day we had our heads shaved, were in uniform, and were marching (sort of) The only good thing was that we weren't rainbows (still in civvies) since that makes you really stand out.

I thought the same thing. "WHAT THE **** WAS I THINKING?" I asked myself that the 1st night all the way through at least the next few days. At least til I got myself settled and established. And there were other times. Like when I got into some trouble and was punished by having 4am work outs with Navy Seals. OH MY GOD!!! I remember wanting to die. I thought there was no way I could do this another day, but I did. You are capable of doing more than you think. Hated the 1st day though.
Basic training isnt tough. I guess it depends on your which service you enter. Navy-easy. Marines-its similar to the navy, but there is more running and its longer. Friends that I have in the Airforce said their boot camp was a joke and I dont know about the Army.

Went to MCRD and they got us at the airport, then we kept our heads down the whole hour they drove us around(later found out the depot was next to the airport). We got there and they gave us our hair cuts, got us into platoons, and then we stayed up for I dont know how long we stayed up a couple of days. It was torture getting yelled at and being told we were nothing but goof ups. After the first week we went to our normal Drill Instructors, thought it would get better but it didnt until the end.

What, the Hell, did I do? Seriously, they woke us up at 4:30 in the morning after processing, by throwing a trash can around the barracks. I thought, as I was going through...how the hell am I supposed to remember all this!? but after several "cycles" many romantic "IT" sessions and one guy jumping off the barracks because of the pressure, I graduated and even got advanced for academic reasons!

We were told it was called "Shark Attack" and there was no deviation from the stories they told us while inprocessing. I was lucky enough to have acouple of guys who had already gone through it but were holdovers due to injuries they sustained while going through the training. They told me to formulate a way to carry all the stuff they gave you so you wouldn't drop anything. So while we were getting yelled at while they hauled us away in cattle trucks I tied all my stuff together so I could carry it in my two hands. Sure enough as soon as the doors opened and the sharks attacked, the first ones that they jumped on were those who were dropping all their stuff. So I was lucky enough to dodge the stress of having the starched rim of the Drill's hat in my face

I went through Navy OCS in Pensacola. I knew it was all a head-game, so I didn't take it personally. Also, the DIs weren't allowed to touch us or use profanity. That didn't stop them from yelling a lot! I knew what I was getting myself into, so it wasn't too shocking for me.

I went to USMCRD in '86, what a rush, I was so proud that I was finally going to be a Marine, and totally terrified that one of those DIs was going to rip my head off. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life.
