I caught a 40 lb Long nose Gar at Lake Harding , Georgia. I had the Georgis state record, buit I let it go. I was after Bass that night and he just happened up on my live bait.
I just cut the line bcasue the hook will rust out and besides, I was not going to tackle that Gar in my boat. Imagine a Alligator Gar over 6ft long...lol
Thats why I cut him loose. It is the best way.

depending on the size of the gar either go with the salt water release when you get to the leader, cut the line. still an official catch. or if the fish is smaller you may be able to use a springlike device mainly used for other toothy critters such as pike or musky. you place the device in thier mouth and a spring holds the mouth open. then use a hook remover to get the hook.

A gar is a hard fish to land. I suggest either a cast net or get the beast as close to you as you can and use tweezers. Since you can't eat gar u should catch and release.

Take a hammer and hit it between the eyes as hard as you can. You'll be doing the lake a favor by thinnig the junk out.
