What about patenting the product as well - this is a product for pets.

As far as the patent goes, you'll probably need to contact a patent lawyer and it will cost you about $1000 total. As far as a prototype, it depends on what you need fabricated. Many smaller machine shops will take on this type of work, but you need an accurate set of plans, and it may not be cheap.

One way to do a preliminary prototype would be though arts and crafts.

What would the product be made of?

Is there a craft's person locally working in that material.
Go to some craft shows to see what people are doing.

Is there a class offered near you in working in that material?
Could you possibly do you prototype in the class?
