Well, he's stranded on a strange world a zillion miles from home, and who knows how long it's been since he's had anything to eat? And anyway, they're peanut and chocolatey delicious! Ooh, lucky his protein structure is right-handed and not left-handed, or it could've killed him! (But then, he would have starved to death before the end of the movie, and no glowing finger thingy would have saved him then)

1) They're good!!
2) He knows they are safe to eat, being from another planet, he has to be careful not to drink the water etc, haha
