This is because of two main reasons:

1) Solar power equipment is very expensive to install and keep running.

2) You need several solar panels to get only a few amps of power.

In time we'll have to resort to solar, wind, and hydrogen power. Don't worry. As we do, the cost of alternative fuel/energy sources will go down and the equipment cost will as well. Right now, it is incredibly expensive to purchase the equipment necessary to harvest all of these natural & free energy sources because the main focus is on fossil fuels. Soon enough, this will all change. We can only depend on fossil fuels for so long. If you're interested in solar power, there is a community called Twin Oaks (based on B. F. Skinner's book "Walden II") that uses only solar & natural powers, and you can look at see how they've done it. Do an Internet search for their web page. It's fairly interesting!

Allot of people do use solar. The solar industry is growing by leaps and bounds. The cost right now is not cheap. The average home would have to have at least $20,000 worth of equipment to change to solar power. I work on allot of solar equipment and also have a solar home, but i only use solar for the lighting and small appliances. Air conditioning, a refrigerator or freezer take allot of power and would require about $10,000 worth of solar equipment just for the refrigerator OR the air conditioner.

Producing the power is not a problem. Solar cell costs are going down and efficiencies are going up. The biggest problem is energy storage; where does the power come from on a cloudy day or at night. If we could lick the storage problem, you would probably see solar panels going up all over.
On a side note, trees are natural solar collectors and have built in storage. Plant trees! :-)

There is a variety of reasons:

1) initial cost.- Capital cost of the equipment is more expensive than other energy sources.
2) Energy obtained is not as powerful as other sources.
3) Just half a day worth collecting this energy.

In power plants the efficiency is defined as the amount of energy obtained in relation to the amount of energy introduced to obtain the first and, in this sense, this number is extremely low in comparison with other sources

because people are lame.
they say they do not like the "look" of solar collectors.
they do not like how a clothesline looks and would rather use electricity to dry clothes!

actually the payback on solar is quite good and takes about half the lifespan to pay back the installation costs. Do not worry, as we run out of fossil fuels we will become more effecient

Its fairly expensive to attain solar power actually. Also people can make more money out of stuff that comes from the ground and they will continue to do that. As for our near future look at E85 Ethanol. It seems to be our best bet.

the sun doesn't always shine. it is quite expensive to install and run. it doesn't produce alot of electricity. very analytical though, but you could have thought it over a little more. it's like asking why the ancient chinese didn't use dynamite for fireworks. It wasn't invented then.
