After Mohammad died, there was no clear successor. Some wanted the new leader to be tied to mohammad genetically, another group wanted to pick whom they choose.

No, not worldwide. The various sects and groups have their leadership, ie in Iran the Shiites have the Ayatollah. However, since Sunnis and Shiites are in constant enmity, there is not one unified agreed-upon leader.

Fortunately the conflict between Catholics, Protestants and non-denominationals has not gone beyond words.
