Gayle Sayers, because after overcoming what usually is a football career ending knee injury and the death of his personal friend and teammate, Brian Piccolo, he went on to be on of the greatest running backs of all time. His character and lasting message is embodied by a quote he borrowed from one of his doctor's "The Lord is first, my family and friends second, and I am third." I remember reading his autobiography, while I was rehabilitating from my own football injury. He had a medallion engraved with "I am third" engraved on it and wore it during his rehabilitation and return to the NFL. I too had a medallion made of this quote and have worn it ever since.
