What is the significance of the little plastic tripod-thing on a pizza?

Hi you must be American. In the UK we don't have the plastic thing. As British Pizza generally tastes like cheesey cardboard we don't mind eating the box lid when it collapses on top of our cheese topping.

Keeps the middle of the box from dipping into the cheesey goodness on the pizza. If you didn't have the plastic tripod thing in the middle of the pizza, chances are the heat and moisture of the pizza would cause the middle of the box to collapse. Then when you open the box after getting it home, half the cheese would be pulled off the pizza and stuck to the top of the pizza box. It's quite a shame when this happens.. All hail the plastic tripod thing!
