How To Defrost A Steak

2016-09-28 06:37:44 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 1 0

Of the answers given, ranita s's is the best if you have to thaw it faster. However, with her version, what can happen is the blood in the meat can become displaced with water and you can lose colour, flavor and texture this way if you're not careful.

At and inch and half, there is simply no way you're going to be able to defrost quickly. The steak is thicker than most you normally get and it will thaw on the outside but the inside will remain frozen and you will dry out the outside and have a rare or even frozen middle if you try to cook it.

With frozen meats you simply have to plan ahead and take it out of the freezer, the night before you plan to cook it and safely thaw it in the refrigerator. Or just buy if from your butcher or grocer already thawed up to three days before and keep it in the fridge.

If it's wrapped water-tight, put it in the sink in cold water. Will probably take longer than a half hour though. Another option is to defrost it in the microwave (VERY low power, most microwaves have a defrost option) but be careful with that, it doesn't always defrost evenly.

Use cold water to partially thaw steak. This can be done very quickly, usually in 15 - 20 minutes.

Occasionally we forget to defrost something for dinner, so we grab a package of frozen meat out of the freezer and use hot water to thaw it fast. But is this safe? Not necessarily, this method of thawing may lead to food borne if left longer than 2 hours.

Food must be kept at a safe temperature during "the big thaw". While foods are safe indefinitely while frozen., as soon as food begins to defrost and become warmer than 40 ºF, any bacteria that may have been present before freezing can begin to multiply. It is not safe to thaw meat on the countertop at room temperature as this allows dangerous bacteria to grow in just two hours, or 1 hour in high summer heat (90°F and above).

Foods should never be thawed on the counter,or defrosted in hot water any longer then two hours. Even though the center of the package may still be frozen as it thaws on the counter, the outer layer of the food is in the "Danger Zone," (between 40 and 140 ºF), temperatures where bacteria multiply rapidly.

Fill sink with room temp water, if you use hot, it can lightly cook the exterior of steak. But let it set for 10 minutes, then rerun water again. It usually doesn't take real long. Keep the meat in the packaging.

why bother defrosting it. Just season and throw on the grill. The juices will be seared inside.

Take it out if you have a aluminum pan put it in there. Aluminum traps heat really well. If you don't have aluminum line a pan with aluminum foil and put in on the pan. Let it sit out the steak will thaw in about an hour and a half. Good Eats.

Please use COLD water to defrost---not hot or even room temp. Fill your sink with cold and place the steak in a plastic baggie in the water.
